Ever since I was a little kid, I’ve been anti-Christmas. The commercialism got to me even as an 8 year old, and when my family stopped spending the holiday with my mother’s family in the amazing house she grew up in, I stopped participating completely.
The exception is the dinner we have with a few other families on Christmas afternoon. Aside from the company, and despite the rest of the meal being delicious, the highlight for me is the dessert shown here: pumpkin trifle. Assembled just before serving, it is layers of pumpkin spice cake, cinnamon custard, candied pumpkin, and whipped cream. It is one of my most favorite desserts in the world, and is absolute perfection. It’s almost enough to make me like Christmas. Almost. But for now I’ll stick to just Hanukkah, lighting candles in my grandfather’s menorah and keeping the gifts to a minimum.
